In 2020, Dr. John Ochsner Discovery Health Sciences Academy opened in Jefferson Parish, implementing the structure and best practices that contributed to the success of Discovery’s flagship school, Kenner Discovery. Dr. John Ochsner Discovery is an open-enrollment public charter school educating 742 Pre-Kindergarten through 8th-grade students.
In 2022, Dr. John Ochsner Discovery was named a Top Gains Honoree for Louisiana. Top Gains awards recognize schools for exceptional student academic growth. Through a strong academic program, health sciences integration, and a growing middle school athletic program, students can discover talents, explore opportunities, and achieve success. Discovery students are prepared to solve challenging problems, use technology, work together, and think creatively.
The health sciences model teaches students sustainability of the environment, proactive health care, good nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices. We aim to give students a solid academic foundation for high school, career, college readiness, and lifelong learning. The curriculum prepares students for the modern world. It delivers hands-on learning opportunities where they can practice essential skills for life, such as critical thinking, teamwork, creative problem solving, project management, innovative thinking, and confidence that stems from academic achievement.
We are proud to be one of six schools in the nation to implement the Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen program, partially funded through the generous support of the Emeril Lagasse Foundation. This program is a perfect partnership for a health sciences school as it supports our mission and complements our emphasis on good nutrition and farm-to-table meals. We view the culinary garden and kitchen as a learning lab for teachers to make math, science, social studies, or art lessons come to life through experiential learning.
In August 2021, the school moved into a new, world-class campus on the John Martyn site in Shrewsbury near Jefferson Highway and Causeway Boulevard. The new facility is designed specifically for the goals and mission of Dr. John Ochsner Discovery. The campus has multiple science labs, maker space, a library, a computer lab, Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen, a satellite Boh Center for Child Development, a large gym, a cafeteria, and specialized classrooms to provide the entire student population wraparound services. In addition to beautiful interiors, the school boasts a complementary outdoor play space, as recess is a part of the school day at every grade level.
